Since 1968
The Bianchi family and the farm
Three generations, the same land: how Il Poggio began and how we carry it forward today.

01
The family
Il Poggio began in 1968, when grandparents Bianchi bought the farm and set about restoring vines that were yielding little at the time, and an olive grove that had largely been left to grow wild. Their son Roberto expanded the cellar in the 1990s, opening the first rooms to guests. Today the farm is run by Elena and Marco, who added the pool and the dining room, while keeping the same approach: the land comes first, everything else follows.

02
Wine and oil
We grow about eight hectares of Sangiovese, from which our Chianti Classico is made, vinified and bottled entirely on the estate. Alongside the vineyard, four hectares of olive grove give us an extra-virgin oil that we press within a few hours of picking, in November, at a mill two kilometres from here. Guests staying with us find both on the table at breakfast and dinner, and can visit the cellar on request.

03
Sustainability
Since 2015 we've farmed organically: no herbicides, mechanical mowing between the rows, and fertilising with our own compost. The vegetable garden that supplies the kitchen follows the seasons, and whatever we don't use in the kitchen goes into the jams served at breakfast. It's a slower way of working, but it's what those who came before us taught us.
